This legendary terrace café offers one of the most spectacular sunset views in the world: the sky blazing orange behind the Koutoubia Mosque, Jemaa el-Fnaa transforming as the square fills with lights, smoke rising from food stalls. As a travel photographer, this is one of my top recommended spots for anyone visiting Marrakesh.

Why Le Grand Balcon du Café Glacier is Special

Marrakesh is full of rooftop cafés, but Le Grand Balcon du Café Glacier is unique for two reasons:

Unobstructed view over Jemaa el-Fnaa. Its terrace sits at just the right height to see the entire square and the minaret of Koutoubia Mosque perfectly framed.
Golden-hour atmosphere. As the sun sets, the light warms the terracotta walls of the medina and softens the chaos of the square below into a painterly scene.

When to Go

Timing is everything for sunset photography here.

Arrive early: At least 1 hour before sunset to claim a good seat along the terrace railing. The café gets crowded, especially in peak season.

The café has a minimum order to sit on the terrace, usually a drink. My go-to choices:
