Hiking in Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park

Our adventure began with a hike through the majestic landscapes of Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park. As we set foot on the trail, the scent of pine trees filled the air, and the melodic sound of birdsong serenaded our ears. The trail was well-marked, making it easy to navigate with the whole family.

There are many spectacular Trails in the National Park. It is important to choose the right one for what you want. How long do you want it? How steep can you handle? What are you most interested in?

A guide to our hike in Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park and some of the trails you can choose.
One popular trails in the park is the Ordesa Valley trail, which takes you on a mesmerizing journey through the heart of the park. This trail showcases the park’s diverse flora and fauna, including vibrant wildflowers and the occasional sighting of wildlife.

We choose a shorter trail to a waterfall where we had lunch and took a refreshing dip. On the way there the hills where alive with the sound of cowbells and we marveled at the impressive cliffs that towered above us, creating a sense of awe and reverence for nature’s grandeur.

Refreshing Swim in a Stream

As the sun reached its peak, we stumbled upon a picturesque stream meandering through the valley. The crystal-clear water glistened invitingly, tempting us to take a refreshing dip. We couldn’t resist the opportunity to cool off and connect with the pristine natural surroundings. It was a moment of pure bliss as we splashed around, feeling the invigorating water against our skin and creating memories that would last a lifetime.

A Visit to Ainsa: The Most Beautiful Small Town in Spain

After a rewarding day of hiking, we decided to explore the nearby town of Ainsa, renowned as the most beautiful small town in Spain. Its well-preserved medieval architecture and charming cobblestone streets transported us back in time.

1. Faja de las Flores

The Faja de las Flores trail is a moderate-level hike that winds along the cliffs, offering panoramic views of the Ordesa Valley. As you hike along this trail, you’ll be captivated by the beauty of wildflowers, the sound of rushing water, and the refreshing mountain air. 2. Circo de Soaso

For a more immersive experience in the heart of the park, the Circo de Soaso trail is a must. This trail takes you to the iconic Cola de Caballo (Horse’s Tail) waterfall, where you can witness the raw power of nature. The hike is relatively easy and can be enjoyed by hikers of all ages. The sight of the majestic waterfall cascading down the cliffs is a true spectacle and a highlight of any family hike. 3. Circo Monte Perdido – Cascada de La Larri

Another fantastic trail to explore with your family is the Circo Monte Perdido – Cascada de La Larri. This trail leads you to the magnificent Cascada de La Larri, a breathtaking waterfall nestled within the Cirque de Gavarnie, a natural amphitheater surrounded by towering cliffs.

As you embark on this trail, you’ll be treated to stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The trail meanders through lush meadows, crossing crystal-clear streams along the way. The gentle ascent makes it accessible for families with children, and the rewards at the end are truly worth it.

As you approach the Cascada de La Larri, you’ll hear the soothing sound of water cascading down the rocks. The sight of the waterfall gushing into a picturesque pool below is simply awe-inspiring. Take a moment to immerse yourself in the tranquility of the surroundings and capture this magical moment with your family.

We took this trail on a sunny day in July 2022. We started at 9 and took a few breaks on the way up to Cascada de La Larri where we had lunch. We took the longer way on the way back and got quite tired before arriving back at the carpark at 3 PM. It was a full day hike for a family with active kids of 11 and 7.

It costs about 150€ in peak season for a double room and gets booked up quickly. If you want a more affordable option you have to take a car ride before hiking. We stayed at Hotel Restaurante Turmo in Carretera Aínsa and had a 45 min by car before we reached the car park next to Parador de Bielsa. If was affordable, comfortable but in every way just okay. A better option is staying at the cosy village of Ainsa.
