1. Church of St. John at Kaneo, Lake Ohrid

Where: Perched on a cliff on the eastern side of Lake Ohrid, near Ohrid town.

Why it’s great: It’s the classic Macedonian postcard. At sunrise, the sun comes up behind you/glowing across the lake, illuminating the church and casting pastel colours over the water. Because fewer people are around early, you can often get clean shots.

How to shoot:

Arrive ~30–45 minutes before sunrise for the pre-dawn light.

Use a wide-angle (16–35mm) to include the church, lake, and mountains in the background.

Also bring a 70–200mm zoom for isolating details (frescoes, church walls) or compressing the landscape.

Reflections: If water is calm, you might get mirror reflections of the church.

Best in spring & autumn (softer light, fewer haze/fog).

Example photo: Seagulls over Lake Ohrid at Sunrise (Pexels) (Pexels)
More info / inspiration: Guide specifying Kaneo as the top sunrise spot in Ohrid. (twoticketsto.co.uk)

2. Galicica Mountain Viewpoint (Magaro Peak or viewpoint between Ohrid & Prespa)

Where: On the ridge road between Ohrid and Prespa, at elevations ~1,500-1,700 m.

Why it’s great: You can see both lakes (Ohrid and Prespa) from certain points; at sunrise, the light often hits the lakes differently and you can get dramatic colours in clouds, valleys, and lakes. Sometimes a “sea of clouds” effect over Prespa in mornings.

How to shoot:

Use wide-angle for lake + ridge panorama.

Telephoto for compressing layers.

Early morning — you’ll often deal with clouds or haze. Blue hour and golden hour are your friends.

Bring a tripod since light may be low initially.

Example photo/inspiration: Galicica Mountain Viewpoint listed among “7 Most Breathtaking Viewpoints” in North Macedonia. (InsideMK)

3. Matka Canyon Viewpoint (above Matka Canyon)

Where: Above the Matka Canyon’s lake via one of the lookout platforms or higher trails.

Why it’s great: Emerald waters, cliffs, monasteries sitting against water. Sunrise often brings mist on the lake, and light filling the canyon. Also less crowded pre-sunrise.

How to shoot:

Arrive early for mist.

Depending on exact location, sun may rise lighting up cliff faces.

Shoot wide for landscape, telephoto for details like monastery or boats.

Use ND or graduated ND filters to balance sky and water exposure.

Example photo: Morning scene of Matka Canyon (Freepik) (Freepik)
Additional source noting Matka’s potential in morning/morning-scene photography.

4. Millennium Cross, Vodno Mountain (Skopje)

Where: On top of Vodno Mountain above Skopje, at the Millennium Cross viewpoint (~1,066 m).

Why it’s great: The cross itself is a striking foreground, then you get sweeping views over Skopje Valley and beyond. Sunrise gives you city lights fading, sky colours, and mountain silhouettes.

How to shoot:

Take cable car or hike early so you reach before the sun.

Use wide-angle lens to capture cross + city + sunrise colours.

Consider telephoto to compress distant mountains.

Blue hour and golden hour are very productive here.

Example photo: Viewpoint listed in “7 Breathtaking Viewpoints” includes Vodno Cross. (InsideMK)

Why it’s great: High altitude lakes, often still in early morning, with reflections of peaks, pine forests, and sometimes mist. Sunrises here are crisp, with alpine air and sharp contrasts.

How to shoot:

Hike in with gear so you get there pre-dawn.

Use tripod and polarizer.

Wide-angle to capture both lakes and mountain ridges.

Autumn is especially beautiful for colour in pine forest.

Where: Dobra Voda, highest peak of Čeloica mountains near Kičevo (~2,062 m).

Why it’s great: From its summit, you have sweeping views over surrounding valleys, villages, and mountains. East-facing slopes catch first light dramatic. On clear days you can see far.

How to shoot:
