Tiveden National Park is one of the most atmospheric places in Sweden for landscape and nature photography. Located between Lake Vänern and Lake Vättern, the park is famous for its ancient-looking forests, enormous glacial boulders, narrow crevice valleys, rocky hills, small forest lakes and dramatic wilderness atmosphere.

For photographers, Tiveden is especially interesting because the landscape changes dramatically over very short distances. One moment you can be photographing enormous moss-covered boulders deep inside an old forest, and minutes later you can be standing on exposed bedrock overlooking a lake.

The national park was established in 1983 and protects a rugged landscape where pine forest, spruce forest, wetlands, rocky terrain and lakes have developed with relatively little modern forestry. The difficult terrain helped protect some of the old forest, while historic forest fires have also shaped the landscape. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

For a travel photographer, Tiveden is particularly rewarding in autumn, when colourful foliage contrasts with dark spruce forest, green moss and grey granite. Early mornings can also produce beautiful mist around the lakes and atmospheric light filtering through the trees.

This guide covers the best photo spots in Tiveden National Park, including the most photogenic trails, viewpoints, lakes, boulders, caves and forest landscapes.

Why Tiveden Is So Good for Photography

Tiveden has a very different character from many of Sweden’s more accessible forests.

The terrain is rugged and chaotic, with huge rocks transported by the last Ice Age, narrow rift valleys, exposed bedrock and forest growing between the rocks. Some boulders reach several metres in height, creating excellent foreground subjects and dramatic compositions. (Tiveden)

The park is also one of the southern Swedish areas where you can still experience old pine forest shaped by natural fires. This creates a mixture of twisted old pines, open rocky areas, younger trees, moss-covered forest floors and darker woodland.

For photographers, the main subjects include:

Ancient pine forest

Moss-covered boulders

Huge glacial erratics

Crevice valleys

Rocky viewpoints

Forest lakes

Reflections

Mist

Autumn colours

Wildflowers

Mushrooms

Moss and lichens

Birds

Insects

Forest details

Winter ice formations

The park has also recorded more than 770 beetle species, highlighting just how rich the forest ecosystem is. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

Best Time to Photograph Tiveden

Autumn

Autumn is arguably the best season for photography in Tiveden.

October can bring colourful deciduous trees, while the evergreen spruce and pine provide darker backgrounds that make yellow, orange and red foliage stand out.

The combination of:

colourful foliage

green moss

grey rocks

dark forest

low autumn sunlight

misty lakes

creates excellent conditions for atmospheric photography.

The official national park information specifically highlights October for colourful deciduous trees and clear air with far-reaching views. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

Spring

Spring is excellent for woodland details.

Look for:

Fresh green moss

New foliage

Forest flowers

Reflections in small lakes

Soft morning light

Wet rocks

Mushrooms and fungi

Birds

Spring mornings can also produce beautiful low-angle light through the trees.

Summer

Summer is ideal for combining hiking, landscape photography and lakeside photography.

The forests are lush and green, while the exposed granite and sandy beach at Vitsand provide a completely different photographic environment.

Summer is also a good time for macro photography.

Winter

Winter can transform Tiveden into a very different landscape.

Snow-covered boulders, frost, frozen lakes and ice formations can create minimalist compositions.

The official park information specifically mentions impressive ice formations around Stigmanspasset during winter. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

Winter access can be more difficult, however, so check conditions before travelling.

Best Time of Day for Photography

Sunrise

Sunrise is one of the best times to photograph Tiveden.

The forest is usually quieter, the light is softer and mist can develop above the lakes.

Good sunrise subjects include:

Stora Trehörningen

Vitsand

Forest lakes

Rocky viewpoints

Open pine forest

Arriving early also gives you the best chance of photographing the trails before they become busy.

Morning

Morning is particularly good for forest photography.

The low sun can illuminate individual trees while the background remains darker.

This is an excellent time for telephoto compositions isolating:

Tree trunks

Moss-covered rocks

Sunbeams

Ferns

Fog

Forest details

Golden Hour

Late afternoon and evening are excellent for exposed rocks, forest edges and lakes.

Warm sunlight can turn the granite golden while the surrounding forest remains dark.

Blue Hour

Blue hour works particularly well around the lakes.

Try a tripod, low ISO and a long exposure to create smooth reflections and a quiet, minimalist image.

The Best Photo Spots in Tiveden National Park

1. Stenkälla

Stenkälla is one of the most iconic photographic locations in Tiveden.

The area is famous for its enormous boulders and dramatic rock formations, sometimes described as a natural stone temple.

The official park information identifies Stenkälla as one of the major attractions and the main destination on Stenkällerundan. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

This is one of the places where Tiveden’s geology becomes especially impressive.

What to photograph

Look for:

Huge moss-covered boulders

Narrow passages between rocks

Twisted pine trees

Moss and lichen

Small openings in the forest

Leading lines between rocks

People for scale

A wide-angle lens is useful here, but don’t photograph everything at 14mm.

Try using a 24–35mm focal length and look for layered compositions where a rock dominates the foreground and the forest disappears into the background.

Best light

Overcast weather can actually be excellent.

Soft light brings out the texture of moss and rocks without producing harsh highlights.

Rain can make the forest even more atmospheric.

2. Stenkälleklack

For a completely different view, make the detour towards Stenkälleklack.

The official description of Stenkällerundan specifically recommends the detour to Stenkälleklack for broader views over the surrounding landscape. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

This is one of the places to bring your landscape lens.

Photography tips

Look for:

Layers of forest

Exposed granite

Distant hills

Autumn colours

Low morning fog

A telephoto lens can be particularly effective when the atmosphere is hazy.

Instead of photographing the entire landscape with a wide lens, compress several layers of forest into a more graphic composition.

3. Stenkällerundan

Stenkällerundan is the most popular trail in the national park and one of the best choices if your primary goal is photography.

The official trail is 2.2 km and takes approximately 1.5 hours, although photographers should allow considerably longer. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

The trail combines:

Old forest

Large boulders

Exposed rock

Stenkälla

Lake views

Pine forest

Spruce forest

The southern part runs alongside Stora Trehörningen, while the trail also passes Älgasundet and an old charcoal-making site. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

Photography recommendation

Don’t rush this trail.

If you are visiting specifically for photography, allow at least half a day.

4. Stora Trehörningen

Stora Trehörningen is one of the most important photographic landscapes in Tiveden.

The lake provides a completely different visual experience from the rocky interior of the forest.

Water gives you opportunities for:

Reflections

Sunrise photography

Mist

Long exposures

Minimalist compositions

Shoreline details

Forest silhouettes

Stenkällerundan runs along part of the lake, while Trehörningsrundan circles the entire lake. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

Best conditions

Visit early in the morning when the water is calm.

On a still autumn morning, look for reflections of colourful trees and dark pine forest.

A small amount of mist can transform the scene.

5. Vitsand

Vitsand is probably the most unusual photographic location in Tiveden.

Instead of the typical dark forest and granite landscape, you find a long sandy beach beside Stora Trehörningen.

The area combines:

White sand

Forest

Lake

Rocky terrain

Tärnekullen

Vitsandsgrottorna

The official park information describes Vitsand as one of the park’s characteristic attractions. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

What to photograph

Try looking for minimalist compositions using:

Sand

Water

Pine trees

Reflections

Rocks

During summer, the beach can become busy, so early morning is the best time for clean compositions.

6. Vitsandsgrottorna

Vitsandsgrottorna are an excellent location for photographers who enjoy unusual geological subjects.

The caves and giant blocks were created by material transported by the last Ice Age. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

The area gives you opportunities for more intimate compositions than the open lake.

Photography tips

Use a wide-angle lens carefully.

Get close to a foreground rock and use the opening between the rocks to frame the forest beyond.

A tripod can be useful in darker conditions.

Be careful around uneven ground and steep sections.

7. Tärnekullen

Tärnekullen is located close to Vitsand and provides an elevated perspective above the landscape.

Tärnekullerundan is a short but demanding trail of approximately 1.3 km, climbing towards Tärnekullen beside Stora Trehörningen and passing through the boulder landscape around Vitsandsgrottorna. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

This is a particularly good location for:

Lake views

Forest panoramas

Autumn colours

Sunset

Telephoto landscapes

Because the trail includes steep sections and drop-offs, take extra care when carrying camera equipment. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

8. Stora Trollkyrkan

Stora Trollkyrkan is one of the most famous locations in Tiveden.

Together with Lilla Trollkyrkan, these two peaks are described by Sveriges Nationalparker as the park’s best-known sights. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

The landscape around Trollkyrkorna is exactly the kind of terrain that makes Tiveden special.

Expect:

Rocky hills

Old forest

Crevice valleys

Large boulders

Exposed bedrock

Dramatic trees

Best photography approach

Don’t only photograph the viewpoint.

Spend time looking at the forest and rocks around the summit.

The combination of weathered granite and old pine trees can produce very Scandinavian compositions.

9. Lilla Trollkyrkan

Lilla Trollkyrkan offers one of the more interesting elevated viewpoints in the park.

From Lilla Trollkyrkan there is a view towards Lake Vättern. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

On a clear day, use a telephoto lens to compress the distant landscape.

On hazy days, simplify the composition and use the atmospheric layers.

This is a good example of why carrying both a wide-angle and telephoto lens in Tiveden is worthwhile.

10. Trollkyrkerundan

Trollkyrkerundan is one of the best trails for photographers who want to experience the wider landscape of Tiveden.

The trail is approximately 4.6 km and takes around three hours according to the official information. It passes through the park’s characteristic crevice-valley landscape, climbing over rocky hills and descending into wetter forest sections. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

The trail also passes clear evidence of historic forest fires.

One pine along the route has a fire scar from a fire in 1835.

Photography subjects

Look for:

Fire-scarred pine trees

Old pine forest

Rock surfaces

Moss

Crevice valleys

Forest textures

Sunlight through trees

This trail is particularly good for storytelling photography because the landscape changes repeatedly.

11. Stigmanspasset

Stigmanspasset is one of the more dramatic rocky environments in Tiveden.

The narrow terrain and exposed rock can create strong compositions, particularly when photographed in low light.

It is also interesting during winter, when ice formations can develop around the rocky landscape. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

Best lens

A 24–70mm zoom is ideal.

Use the wide end for the larger landscape but zoom in to isolate individual rocks and trees.

12. Junker Jägares sten

Junker Jägares sten is one of the largest and tallest glacial erratics in the park.

The enormous boulder is one of Tiveden’s official attractions. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

It is a great location for photographs showing the scale of Tiveden’s geology.

Composition idea

Place a person beside the boulder.

This immediately communicates its enormous size.

Alternatively, use a wide-angle lens from close to the rock and allow the forest to rise behind it.

13. Junker Jägarerundan

The trail towards Junker Jägares sten is another useful photographic route around Vitsand.

The section from Vitsand towards the rock is relatively easy before the more demanding parts of the trail. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

It can easily be combined with:

Vitsand

Vitsandsgrottorna

Tärnekullen

Stora Trehörningen

This makes the Vitsand entrance particularly useful for photographers wanting several different subjects in one outing.

14. Trehörningsrundan

If you want to experience a large proportion of Tiveden’s landscape in one hike, Trehörningsrundan is an excellent choice.

The trail circles the entire Stora Trehörningen and is approximately 9.5 km, taking around 4–5 hours. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

The route passes all three park entrances and showcases many of the different habitats found in the national park.

For photographers, this means you can photograph:

Lakes

Forest

Rocks

Beaches

Old pines

Wetlands

Autumn foliage

Allow much longer than the hiking time if photography is your priority.

15. Oxögaberg

Oxögaberg is another excellent option for photographers interested in the combination of old forest and rocky terrain.

Oxögabergsrundan is approximately 6.7 km and takes you through Tiveden’s old-growth forest. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

This area is particularly interesting when the weather is atmospheric.

Fog, drizzle and low cloud can make the forest look almost mystical.

16. Mellannäsudden

Mellannäsudden offers a somewhat different photographic experience.

The trail is described as the easiest hiking trail in the national park and runs across a gently undulating gravel ridge. The area also contains remains connected to historical charcoal and tar production. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

This is a good option if you want:

Easier walking

Forest photography

Historical details

Close-up photography

A quieter experience

It is also useful for photographers travelling with family members who don’t want a demanding hike.

17. The Old Pine Forest

Don’t make the mistake of photographing only the famous attractions.

Some of the best images in Tiveden can come from simply walking through the forest.

The park contains old pine forest shaped by natural fire, producing twisted trees, open rocky ground and interesting combinations of trees at different stages of growth. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

Look for

Bent pine trunks

Trees growing from rocks

Dead trees

Moss-covered logs

Backlit branches

Tree trunks disappearing into fog

Repeating vertical lines

A telephoto lens is excellent for isolating individual trees.

18. Moss-Covered Boulders

Tiveden is a dream location for anyone who enjoys woodland detail photography.

The huge boulders are often covered in moss, lichens and vegetation.

Instead of photographing the whole rock, get close.

Use a 90mm macro lens to capture:

Moss textures

Lichen

Tiny plants

Water droplets

Fungi

Insects

This is one of the places where a macro lens can produce completely different images from the standard landscape photographs.

19. Forest Lakes and Small Ponds

Tiveden contains many smaller bodies of water in addition to Stora Trehörningen.

These can be more interesting than the main lake for intimate landscape photography.

Look for:

Calm reflections

Fallen trees

Water lilies

Reeds

Mist

Reflections between trees

A telephoto lens can compress the shoreline and create a more intimate composition.

20. Forest Fire Landscapes

Fire is an important part of Tiveden’s ecological history.

The park’s old pine forests have been shaped by repeated natural fires, and prescribed burning is also used as part of modern conservation management. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

This creates unusual photographic opportunities.

Look for:

Charred trunks

Old fire scars

Dead standing trees

Young pine

Open forest

Regenerating vegetation

These photographs can tell a much stronger story than a conventional forest landscape.

Best Instagram Spots in Tiveden

If you want the most visually distinctive locations for Instagram and social media, prioritize:

Stenkälla

Stenkälleklack

Vitsand

Vitsandsgrottorna

Tärnekullen

Stora Trollkyrkan

Lilla Trollkyrkan

Junker Jägares sten

Stora Trehörningen

Stigmanspasset

For social media, vertical compositions work particularly well in the narrow rocky environments.

Try shooting 4:5 compositions rather than automatically photographing everything horizontally.

Best Sunrise Photo Spots in Tiveden

For sunrise, prioritize locations where you can photograph water or open terrain.

Best choices

Stora Trehörningen

Excellent for reflections and morning mist.

Vitsand

The beach gives you an open foreground and clean compositions.

Tärnekullen

Useful if you want an elevated perspective.

Forest clearings

Low sunlight through the pines can create beautiful atmospheric images.

Arrive before sunrise so you have time to walk to your location in darkness.

Best Sunset Photo Spots in Tiveden

Sunset is particularly useful at exposed rocky viewpoints and elevated terrain.

Good choices include:

Tärnekullen

Stenkälleklack

Trollkyrkobergen

Exposed granite areas

Lakeside locations

However, don’t assume that sunset will always produce the best forest photographs.

For woodland photography, early morning often produces much more interesting light.

Best Photography Spots in Tiveden in Autumn

Autumn is when Tiveden becomes particularly spectacular.

Prioritize:

Stora Trehörningen

Look for reflections of autumn trees.

Vitsand

The combination of beach, water and autumn forest is unusual.

Stenkälla

Colourful foliage contrasts beautifully with moss-covered rocks.

Trollkyrkerundan

Excellent for combining colourful trees with rocky terrain.

Stenkälleklack

Use a telephoto lens to compress colourful forest layers.

The clear autumn air can also make distant views particularly attractive. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

Best Photography Spots for Macro Photography

Tiveden is excellent for macro photography.

The combination of old forest, moss, dead wood, fungi and insects provides subjects almost everywhere.

Bring a macro lens and look for:

Mushrooms

Moss

Lichens

Ferns

Forest flowers

Insects

Water droplets

Bark textures

Tiny plants growing on rocks

A 90mm macro lens is particularly useful because it gives enough working distance for insects while also producing beautiful compressed forest details.

Wildlife Photography in Tiveden

Tiveden’s old forest provides habitat for many species.

Early mornings are the best time for wildlife photography.

Move quietly and avoid making unnecessary noise.

Bird photographers should pay particular attention to the forest canopy and edges of lakes.

The official national park information notes that visitors may even encounter capercaillie displaying on early summer mornings. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

A telephoto lens is therefore useful if wildlife photography is one of your priorities.

Photography Gear for Tiveden

You don’t need a huge amount of equipment.

A good setup would be:

Camera

A full-frame mirrorless camera is ideal.

Wide-angle lens

Useful for:

Stenkälla

Vitsandsgrottorna

Crevice valleys

Large boulders

Forest interiors

24–70mm lens

Probably the most versatile lens for a Tiveden photography trip.

Use it for landscapes, forest scenes, environmental portraits and details.

Telephoto lens

Useful for:

Distant forest layers

Wildlife

Birds

Isolated trees

Compression

Autumn landscapes

Macro lens

Excellent for:

Moss

Fungi

Lichens

Insects

Forest details

Tripod

Bring a lightweight tripod if you want:

Long exposures

Water reflections

Blue-hour photography

Focus stacking

Macro photography

Camera Settings for Tiveden

There is no single perfect setting, but these are useful starting points.

Landscape photography

Try:

ISO 100

f/8–f/11

Aperture priority or manual

Exposure compensation as needed

Tripod when light levels are low

Forest photography

Start around:

ISO 100–800

f/5.6–f/8

1/60 sec or faster handheld

The dark forest can require higher ISO than you might expect.

Macro photography

Try:

f/5.6–f/8

ISO 100–800

Manual focus or AF-S

Tripod when practical

For tiny subjects, focus stacking can produce significantly more depth of field.

Long exposures

Use:

ISO 100

f/8–f/11

Tripod

2–30 seconds depending on conditions

A polarizer can also be useful for reducing reflections on wet rocks and foliage.

How Difficult Is Photography in Tiveden?

Tiveden is not the easiest national park for carrying lots of equipment.

Many trails pass through rugged terrain with rocks, roots, steep sections and narrow passages.

The official information specifically warns that several trails have demanding terrain, steep passages and drop-offs. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

For that reason, I recommend:

A lightweight camera bag

One versatile zoom

One wide-angle lens

A compact tripod

Comfortable hiking shoes

Don’t carry every lens you own.

Best Tiveden Photography Strategy

If this is your first visit, don’t try to photograph everything.

Instead, divide the park into photographic themes.

Day 1: Main entrance

Concentrate on:

Stenkälla

Stenkälleklack

Stenkällerundan

Trollkyrkerundan

Old-growth forest

Day 2: Vitsand

Concentrate on:

Vitsand

Vitsandsgrottorna

Tärnekullen

Junker Jägares sten

Stora Trehörningen

This gives you a much better photographic experience than trying to race through the entire park.

One-Day Tiveden Photography Itinerary

If you only have one day, start early.

Sunrise

Go to Stora Trehörningen or Vitsand.

Photograph:

Reflections

Mist

Forest silhouettes

Morning light

Morning

Head towards Stenkälla.

Spend time photographing the huge boulders and surrounding forest.

Midday

Walk Stenkällerundan and explore the forest.

Midday is actually useful for photographing the darker forest because the light is more even.

Afternoon

Move towards Tärnekullen or another elevated location.

Photograph the surrounding landscape with a telephoto lens.

Sunset

Finish beside Stora Trehörningen or from an elevated rocky viewpoint.

If conditions are good, stay for blue hour.

Two-Day Tiveden Photography Itinerary

Day 1 – Stenkälla and Trollkyrkorna

Start early at the main entrance.

Photograph:

Forest

Stenkälla

Stenkälleklack

Stigmanspasset

Trollkyrkerundan

Stora Trollkyrkan

Lilla Trollkyrkan

Take your time.

Day 2 – Vitsand and Stora Trehörningen

Start at Vitsand.

Photograph:

Vitsand beach

Vitsandsgrottorna

Tärnekullen

Junker Jägares sten

Stora Trehörningen

Finish with sunset or blue hour beside the lake.

How to Get to Tiveden National Park

Tiveden National Park is located between Vänern and Vättern, in Örebro and Västra Götaland counties. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

For photographers with camera equipment, travelling by car is generally the most practical option because it gives you greater flexibility between the different entrances.

The park has three principal entrances:

Main entrance

Vitsand

Ösjönäs

There are also several access points and trails connecting different parts of the area.

Before travelling, check the official park information for current access, parking and trail conditions.

Photography Ethics in Tiveden

Tiveden is a protected national park, so responsible photography is particularly important.

Stay on marked trails where required.

Do not climb on sensitive vegetation or damage moss and lichens to create a composition.

Don’t move rocks, break branches or disturb dead wood.

Never approach wildlife for a better photograph.

Keep noise to a minimum, particularly early in the morning.

If you use a drone, check the current rules before flying. Protected areas can have restrictions, and the fact that a drone can physically be flown somewhere does not automatically mean it is permitted.

Always check the current national park regulations before your visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Tiveden National Park good for photography?

Yes. Tiveden is particularly good for landscape, forest, macro and nature photography because of its combination of old forest, huge boulders, rocky terrain, crevice valleys and lakes.

What is the most photogenic place in Tiveden?

Stenkälla is probably the most iconic photographic location because of its enormous boulders and dramatic old-growth forest.

Is Tiveden good for autumn photography?

Absolutely. October is particularly good because colourful deciduous vegetation contrasts with evergreen pine and spruce forest, moss and granite.

Where should I photograph sunrise in Tiveden?

Start with Stora Trehörningen or Vitsand. Calm mornings can produce reflections and mist over the water.

Where should I photograph sunset in Tiveden?

Try Tärnekullen, Stenkälleklack, Trollkyrkobergen or exposed rocky areas around the lakes.

How long should I spend photographing Tiveden?

One full day is enough for a first overview, but two days are much better for photography. A two-day trip allows you to photograph both the main entrance/Stenkälla area and Vitsand/Stora Trehörningen without rushing.

Is Tiveden difficult to hike with camera equipment?

Some trails are challenging. Several routes contain steep sections, rocks, roots and uneven terrain. Pack light and use a comfortable camera backpack.

Yes. The old forest supports a wide range of wildlife, and the park notes that capercaillie may be encountered on early summer mornings. Always photograph wildlife from a respectful distance.

Is Tiveden good for macro photography?

Very much so. Moss, lichens, fungi, insects and forest plants are excellent macro subjects throughout the park.

Is Stenkälla worth visiting?

Definitely. Stenkälla is one of the defining landscapes of Tiveden and one of the best locations for photographing the park’s huge glacial boulders.

Is Vitsand worth visiting for photographers?

Yes. Vitsand provides a completely different look from the rest of Tiveden, combining a long sandy beach, Lake Stora Trehörningen, pine forest and rocky terrain.

Can I visit Tiveden with children?

Yes, but choose the route carefully. Some trails are demanding, while others are considerably easier. The Vitsand area and shorter routes can be good choices, depending on the age and ability of the children.

Can I photograph Tiveden in winter?

Yes. Snow, frost and ice can transform the park. Stigmanspasset can be particularly interesting for ice formations, although winter access and trail conditions can be challenging. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

What lens should I bring to Tiveden?

A 24–70mm is probably the best all-round option. Add a wide-angle lens for caves and giant boulders, a telephoto for distant landscapes and wildlife, and a macro lens for moss, fungi and insects.

Is a tripod useful in Tiveden?

Yes. A lightweight tripod is useful for lake reflections, long exposures, blue hour, low-light forest photography and macro work.

Is Tiveden one of Sweden’s best photography destinations?

For photographers who enjoy forests and wilderness landscapes, definitely. The combination of old pine forest, enormous boulders, lakes, rocky hills and atmospheric woodland makes Tiveden unusually diverse.

Final Photography Tips

The biggest mistake you can make in Tiveden is trying to photograph everything too quickly.

Slow down.

Walk a few hundred metres, stop, and look carefully.

The famous boulders and viewpoints are worth photographing, but some of the strongest images may be hidden in the forest between the major attractions.

Look for the way light hits a single pine tree.

Look for moss growing over granite.

Look for a tiny pool reflecting the forest.

Look for a crooked tree emerging from a sea of boulders.

Look for fog between the trees.

And don’t be afraid to leave the camera in the bag for a few minutes.

Tiveden is at its best when you experience it as a wilderness landscape rather than simply moving from one marked attraction to the next.

For a photographer, that combination of ancient forest, giant rocks, quiet lakes and constantly changing light is what makes Tiveden National Park one of Sweden’s most rewarding places to explore with a camera.

Idre is one of the best bases in Sweden for nature photography. Within relatively short driving distance you can photograph dramatic mountain silhouettes, open alpine landscapes, waterfalls, ancient forests, mountain lakes, wetlands, wildlife and some of the most beautiful autumn scenery in northern Dalarna.

The area around Idre is particularly interesting for photographers because the landscape changes dramatically within a few kilometres. You can start the morning above the tree line at Nipfjället, photograph the distinctive silhouette of Städjan, spend the afternoon looking for waterfalls and old-growth forest, and finish the day beside a mountain lake or on an open plateau watching the last light.

For photographers, the biggest advantage is accessibility. The Städjan-Nipfjället nature reserve is one of the most accessible mountain areas in Dalarna, with a road taking you high into the landscape. From there you can reach viewpoints and hiking trails without committing to a long expedition.

Below are my picks for the best nature photography locations around Idre, from places that are only minutes away to destinations that work well as longer day trips.

Best nature photography spots around Idre

Städjan

Nipfjället and Mulen

Lillnipen

Burusjön

Gränjåsen Nature Reserve

Fjätervålen

Fjätfallen-Kryptjärn Nature Reserve

Klingforsen

Vålåberget Nature Reserve

Drevfjällen Nature Reserve

Drevdagen Nature Reserve

Gryvelån Nature Reserve

Fulufjället National Park and Njupeskär

Grövelsjön and Långfjället

Hävlingen and the wilderness around Grövelsjön

1. Städjan – the iconic mountain near Idre

If you photograph only one mountain around Idre, make it Städjan.

Städjan has one of the most recognizable silhouettes in the Swedish mountains. From some angles it resembles a volcanic cone, while from others the characteristic saddle-like shape becomes obvious. The summit reaches 1,131 metres above sea level.

The mountain is part of the large Städjan-Nipfjället nature reserve, which lies only around 8 kilometres northeast of Idre. The area is unusually accessible for a mountain landscape: roads reach high onto the mountain plateau and several trails start from the parking areas.

Google Maps: Städjan on Google Maps

Best photography opportunities

The classic composition is to photograph Städjan from Nipfjället, using the mountain as the dominant subject above the surrounding landscape. This works particularly well with a 70–200mm-type focal length, allowing you to compress the distant landscape.

Do not limit yourself to the classic viewpoint, however. Walk farther onto the plateau and look for foreground elements such as rocks, dwarf birch, heather, lichen and small pools.

In autumn, the vegetation around the mountain becomes especially photogenic. Yellow and orange vegetation contrasts beautifully with the darker mountain slopes.

Best time for Städjan photography

Early autumn: excellent for golden vegetation.

Late summer: good for green mountain landscapes and wildflowers.

Winter: dramatic snow-covered mountain scenery.

Sunset: excellent when the mountain catches warm side light.

Sunrise: particularly good when low cloud or mist sits in the valleys.

Cloud is not necessarily bad here. A completely blue sky can produce a clean landscape, but broken cloud gives the mountain much more atmosphere.

2. Nipfjället and Mulen

Nipfjället is one of the easiest places near Idre to experience high-mountain scenery without undertaking a very long hike.

The summer parking area provides access to open mountain terrain, and the summit of Nipfjället, known as Mulen, reaches 1,191 metres above sea level. The summit hike is approximately 6 kilometres round trip with around 267 metres of elevation gain. The final section is steep and rocky.

Google Maps: Nipfjället on Google Maps

Why photographers should go

Nipfjället gives you something that many Swedish mountain locations lack: huge views with relatively little effort.

From the higher terrain you can photograph Städjan, Idre Fjäll, Fjätervålen, the Grövelsjön area and distant Norwegian mountains. On clear days the visibility can be spectacular.

Use a wide-angle lens for dramatic foregrounds, but bring a telephoto as well. Distant mountains often become much more interesting when compressed into layers.

For a landscape photographer, I would spend at least an hour simply walking around looking for foregrounds rather than immediately heading for the highest point.

3. Lillnipen – an easy mountain viewpoint

If you want mountain photography without the full hike to the summit of Nipfjället or Städjan, Lillnipen is an excellent alternative.

The area around the Nipfjället parking areas provides easy access to open mountain terrain, and Lillnipen can be reached on a relatively short walk. The official description of Städjan-Nipfjället specifically highlights the short walk to Lillnipen as one of the accessible ways to experience the area.

Google Maps: Lillnipen on Google Maps

Best subjects

Städjan

Mountain silhouettes

Low vegetation

Cloud formations

Sunset landscapes

Winter snow patterns

Lillnipen is particularly useful when conditions change quickly. If clouds are moving across the mountains, you can find compositions without committing to a long hike.

4. Burusjön – mountain lake photography

Burusjön is one of the places I would add to an Idre photography itinerary when you want something different from mountain peaks.

The lake lies in the Städjan-Nipfjället area and is surrounded by forests and mountain terrain. The combination of water, trees and distant mountains creates opportunities for reflection photography and minimalist compositions.

Google Maps: Burusjön on Google Maps

Best photography conditions

The best conditions are usually calm mornings when the surface of the lake is still enough to reflect the surrounding landscape.

Arrive before sunrise and look for a low viewpoint close to the shoreline. A 24–70mm zoom is ideal here because you can switch between wider environmental compositions and tighter mountain reflections.

Autumn is particularly attractive because the vegetation around the lake can add strong colour to the foreground.

5. Gränjåsen Nature Reserve

Gränjåsen is one of the lesser-known photography locations close to Idre and deserves more attention.

The nature reserve lies beside the road between Idre Fjäll and Fjätervålen, near Gränjåsvallen. Its old spruce forest is particularly distinctive because the trees are covered with hanging lichens, creating a dark, atmospheric, almost fairytale-like environment.

Google Maps: Gränjåsen on Google Maps

Why it is interesting for photographers

This is a completely different photographic environment from Nipfjället.

Instead of huge mountain panoramas, concentrate on:

Hanging lichens

Old spruce trees

Moss

Forest textures

Small details

Atmospheric woodland scenes

A 90mm macro lens can be particularly useful here for photographing mosses, lichens, leaves and small forest details.

6. Fjätervålen

Fjätervålen is another excellent location for mountain landscapes and is easy to combine with a road trip around the Idre area.

The mountain sits south of the main Städjan-Nipfjället area and offers broad views across the surrounding landscape.

Google Maps: Fjätervålen on Google Maps

Photography ideas

Rather than photographing only the summit, look for layered compositions. The mountains around Idre are particularly effective when photographed in hazy atmospheric conditions, with several ridges fading into the distance.

Late evening is a good time to visit because the low sun creates long shadows across the mountain slopes.

7. Fjätfallen-Kryptjärn Nature Reserve

For waterfall photography, Fjätfallen-Kryptjärn is one of the most interesting destinations in the wider Idre area.

The reserve contains two substantial waterfalls along the lower part of the Fjätälven. It also contains old forest, streams, small wetlands and the forest around the old Kryptjärn mountain farm.

Google Maps: Fjätfallen on Google Maps

Best photography conditions

Overcast weather is ideal for waterfall photography because it gives you soft light and makes it easier to control highlights in the water.

After rain can be particularly good because the river becomes more powerful.

Bring:

Tripod

Polarising filter

ND filter

Microfibre cloth

Wide-angle lens

Standard zoom

Try exposures between roughly 1/2 second and several seconds and vary the shutter speed. Extremely long exposures are not always the best option; some movement in the water can produce a more natural result.

8. Klingforsen

Klingforsen is another useful stop if you are looking for moving water, rapids and forest photography around Idre.

Google Maps: Klingforsen on Google Maps

The surrounding landscape is well suited to shorter photography sessions rather than an entire day. Look for rocks breaking the surface of the water, reflections between the trees and patterns created by flowing water.

Autumn is especially attractive because colourful vegetation contrasts with the darker water and forest.

9. Vålåberget Nature Reserve

If you enjoy old forests and dramatic woodland rather than open mountains, Vålåberget is worth adding to your list.

The reserve is only around four kilometres from Idre. It protects a relatively untouched forest along a rocky mountain edge. The upper parts reach approximately 593 metres above sea level, and the area includes a steep diabase cliff and rock slopes.

Google Maps: Vålåberget on Google Maps

What to photograph

Old pine forest

Rock formations

Cliffs

Moss and lichens

Dead trees

Forest textures

This is a good location for a photographer who likes intimate landscapes. Instead of trying to capture everything in one wide-angle photograph, use longer focal lengths to isolate individual trees and details.

10. Drevfjällen Nature Reserve

Drevfjällen is where you go when you want a genuine wilderness experience.

The reserve lies south of Idre and extends towards the Norwegian border. It is a large, roadless wilderness area and contains Dalarnas largest continuous area of old-growth-like forest. Some of the pine trees are more than 500 years old. The Södra Kungsleden hiking route passes through the reserve.

Google Maps: Drevfjällen on Google Maps

Why photographers should visit

Drevfjällen is not the place to visit if you want a viewpoint directly beside the car.

It is the place to visit if you want:

Ancient pine forest

Remote landscapes

Mountain valleys

Natural-looking forests

Small lakes and streams

Wildlife

Minimalist wilderness photographs

Because the area is largely roadless, plan your photography as a hiking trip. Carry lightweight gear and prioritize one good lens rather than taking everything.

11. Drevdagen Nature Reserve

Drevdagen is another excellent option for photographers interested in a mixture of forest, wetlands, small tarns and mountain viewpoints.

The reserve contains old forests, wet myres, quiet tarns and the viewpoint at Styggberget. The area is also interesting for wildlife photography, with species including capercaillie, willow grouse and Siberian jay possible in the wider area.

Google Maps: Drevdagen on Google Maps

Best subjects

The small tarns are excellent for atmospheric landscape photography, especially on calm mornings when mist forms above the water.

Styggberget is the obvious choice for a larger landscape composition, while the old forest provides opportunities for intimate nature photography.

12. Gryvelån Nature Reserve

Gryvelån is one of the best choices around Idre for photographers who love old-growth forest and wetlands.

The reserve protects a mosaic of wetlands and coniferous forest. Some of the pine trees are more than 400 years old, while spruce trees can reach around 30 metres. The reserve has marked hiking loops of approximately 3 and 6 kilometres.

Google Maps: Gryvelån on Google Maps

Photography opportunities

Old pine trees

Ancient spruce forest

Wetlands

Forest streams

Mosses

Deadwood

Woodpeckers and other forest birds

The combination of old trees and wetland makes this a particularly good location in autumn when the low vegetation adds colour to the forest.

13. Fulufjället National Park and Njupeskär

Fulufjället National Park is farther from Idre than the locations above, but it is too good to leave out of an Idre photography guide.

The main attraction is Njupeskär, one of Sweden’s most spectacular waterfalls, but the national park offers much more than the waterfall. You can photograph old forest, mountain birch, open plateau landscapes, streams, wetlands and the surrounding fjäll.

Google Maps: Fulufjället National Park on Google Maps

The Njupeskärsleden is approximately 3.9 kilometres and passes through several different environments, including old spruce forest, mountain birch woodland and mountain terrain.

Njupeskär photography

Njupeskär is particularly photogenic when you can combine the waterfall with foreground rocks, vegetation and the surrounding gorge.

Do not photograph only the waterfall itself. Spend time photographing the journey through the forest and the landscape above the falls.

Early morning is strongly recommended. The area can be busy during the main summer season, while early morning gives you better light, fewer people and a much more atmospheric experience.

For an in-depth visit, combine Njupeskär with Old Tjikko and the higher mountain landscape.

14. Grövelsjön and Långfjället

Grövelsjön makes an excellent longer day trip from Idre and is one of the best destinations in the region for classic Scandinavian mountain photography.

The Långfjället nature reserve includes the area around Grövelsjön and the Grövelsjön mountain station. There are numerous summer and winter trails leading towards mountains such as Storvätteshågna and the Hävlingen area.

Google Maps: Grövelsjön on Google Maps

What makes Grövelsjön special for photography?

The landscape is much more open than the forests around Idre. You get broad valleys, rounded mountains, lakes and long-distance views towards Norway.

This is an excellent place for minimalist landscape photography.

Use a telephoto lens to compress mountain layers, especially when atmospheric haze separates the ridges.

It is also possible to encounter reindeer in the wider area. Visit Dalarna specifically highlights the possibility of photographing reindeer during hikes around Grövelsjön.

15. Hävlingen and the wilderness around Grövelsjön

If you have a full day and want to go deeper into the landscape, continue towards Hävlingen.

The Hävlingen area lies within the Långfjället landscape, close to Töfsingdalens National Park. There are several mountain cabins around the lake and numerous hiking routes in the surrounding wilderness.

Google Maps: Hävlingen on Google Maps

For photographers, this is about the combination of water, mountains and wilderness rather than a single famous viewpoint.

Look for small islands, shoreline rocks, reflections and mountain layers. Early morning and evening are much more interesting than midday.

Best nature photo spots near Idre by photography type

Photography

Best locations

Mountain landscapes

Städjan, Nipfjället, Grövelsjön

Sunrise

Nipfjället, Städjan, Burusjön

Sunset

Nipfjället, Städjan, Grövelsjön

Waterfalls

Njupeskär, Fjätfallen

Old-growth forest

Drevfjällen, Gryvelån, Vålåberget

Forest details

Gränjåsen, Vålåberget, Gryvelån

Mountain lakes

Burusjön, Grövelsjön, Hävlingen

Wildlife

Grövelsjön, Drevfjällen, Drevdagen, Gryvelån

Autumn photography

Nipfjället, Städjan, Burusjön, Grövelsjön

Winter photography

Nipfjället, Städjan, Fulufjället

Macro

Gränjåsen, Gryvelån, Vålåberget

Water and long exposure

Fjätfallen, Klingforsen, Njupeskär

Best time of year for nature photography around Idre

Spring

Spring arrives late in the mountains. Snow can remain well into the season, making this an excellent period for photographers who want a combination of snow and emerging vegetation.

Waterfalls can also be particularly powerful when snowmelt increases the flow.

Summer

Summer provides the easiest access to the mountain areas and the longest days of the year.

The biggest problem for photographers is crowds at the most famous locations, particularly Njupeskär. Early mornings are therefore much better than midday during the busiest weeks.

Summer is also excellent for wildflowers, insects, mountain vegetation and wildlife.

Autumn

Autumn is arguably the best season for landscape photography around Idre.

The combination of golden mountain birch, colourful low vegetation, dark evergreen forest and distant mountains creates exceptional conditions.

Clear, calm mornings can also produce reflections on the mountain lakes.

If autumn colour is your main priority, keep an eye on local conditions rather than relying on a fixed calendar date. The higher mountain areas change earlier than the valleys.

Winter

Winter transforms the Idre landscape into something completely different.

Snow-covered mountains, frost, frozen waterfalls and low winter light can produce spectacular images. However, winter photography requires more preparation. Some mountain roads and parking areas may not be maintained in the same way as during summer, and hiking conditions can change quickly.

Best sunrise photography locations near Idre

If sunrise is your priority, I would rank the locations roughly like this:

Nipfjället – huge mountain views and easy access.

Städjan – dramatic mountain silhouette.

Burusjön – reflections and calm water.

Grövelsjön – mountains and lake.

Njupeskär – dramatic gorge and early morning atmosphere.

One of the most important photography lessons around Idre is to arrive early enough to photograph the period before sunrise. The blue hour can be just as beautiful as the first direct sunlight.

Best sunset photography locations near Idre

For sunset, concentrate on locations where you have a wide view toward the horizon.

Nipfjället

Städjan

Grövelsjön

Lillnipen

Fjätervålen

The higher mountain areas are particularly good because you can photograph the changing light across several layers of mountains.

Best autumn photography near Idre

Autumn deserves a separate mention because Idre is an excellent destination for photographing Scandinavian fall landscapes.

For broad mountain scenes, concentrate on Nipfjället, Städjan and Grövelsjön.

For forests, visit Gränjåsen, Vålåberget, Gryvelån and Drevfjällen.

For water and autumn colour, try Burusjön, Fjätfallen and the streams around the mountain valleys.

A useful strategy is to photograph the mountains in the morning and switch to forests and details later in the day. Midday light that is too harsh for landscape photography can work very well when photographing moss, lichens, leaves and forest textures.

Wildlife photography around Idre

The Idre region is also interesting for wildlife photographers. The large protected landscapes provide habitats for many mountain and forest species.

Grövelsjön and the surrounding mountain areas can provide opportunities for reindeer photography, while old forests such as Gryvelån and Drevfjällen are interesting for woodland birds. Drevdagen is also noted for species such as Siberian jay, capercaillie and willow grouse.

For wildlife, patience is much more important than simply visiting the most scenic location. Walk quietly, use a telephoto lens and avoid approaching animals.

Never chase wildlife to get a photograph. In sensitive mountain environments, keeping your distance is particularly important.

Best lenses for photographing Idre

You can photograph almost everything around Idre with a three-lens travel kit.

Wide angle

A 14–24mm-type lens is useful for dramatic mountain foregrounds, waterfalls and large skies.

Standard zoom

A 24–70mm lens is probably the most useful all-round option. It covers landscapes, waterfalls, environmental details and many hiking situations.

Telephoto

A 70–200mm or similar telephoto lens is extremely useful in the mountains. Use it to compress distant ridges, isolate Städjan and photograph wildlife.

Macro

A macro lens is underrated in Idre. Gränjåsen, Gryvelån and the old forests around Vålåberget are particularly good places to switch from landscape photography to moss, lichen, flowers and insects.

Camera settings for Idre landscape photography

Mountain landscapes

ISO 100

f/8–f/11

1/30–1/250 second depending on light

Focus approximately one-third into the scene

Use a tripod when light levels are low

Waterfalls

ISO 100

f/8–f/11

1/2–2 seconds for natural water movement

Several seconds for smoother water

Polariser recommended

Wildlife

Fast shutter speed

Auto ISO can be useful

Continuous autofocus

Animal eye detection where appropriate

Telephoto lens

What to pack for a photography trip to Idre

Camera body

Wide-angle lens

24–70mm lens

Telephoto lens

Macro lens if you enjoy details

Lightweight tripod

Polarising filter

ND filter

Extra batteries

Power bank

Waterproof camera protection

Rain jacket

Warm layers

Map and offline navigation

Headlamp for sunrise and sunset hikes

Mountain weather can change quickly. Even during summer, pack enough clothing to handle cold, wind and rain.

How long should you spend photographing Idre?

One day: concentrate on Städjan, Nipfjället and one nearby forest or waterfall.

Two days: add Fjätfallen, Gränjåsen and Burusjön.

Three days: explore the mountains, waterfalls and old forests at a more relaxed pace.

Four to five days: add Fulufjället and Grövelsjön as separate photography days.

If photography is your main reason for visiting, I would choose at least three full days. The area rewards flexibility because weather is such an important part of the experience.

A 3-day Idre photography itinerary

Day 1 – Städjan and Nipfjället

Start before sunrise at Nipfjället.

Photograph the mountains during blue hour and sunrise, then explore the plateau as the light changes. Spend the middle of the day hiking around the area and looking for smaller compositions.

In the evening, return for sunset if conditions look promising.

Day 2 – Forests, lakes and waterfalls

Start at Burusjön for sunrise.

Continue towards Gränjåsen and photograph the old spruce forest. Later, head towards Fjätfallen for waterfall photography.

If you still have energy, finish the day at Klingforsen.

Day 3 – Choose a full-day destination

Choose between:

Fulufjället for Njupeskär, old forest and mountain landscapes.

Grövelsjön for mountain lakes and wide-open landscapes.

Drevfjällen for wilderness and old-growth forest.

For a first photography trip, I would choose Fulufjället if you have never photographed Njupeskär, or Grövelsjön if mountain landscapes are your main priority.

Photography ethics in the Idre mountains

Much of the landscape around Idre is protected nature. Treat it accordingly.

Stay on marked trails where required.

Do not damage vegetation to create foregrounds.

Do not move rocks or logs unnecessarily.

Keep your distance from wildlife.

Do not disturb nesting birds.

Follow local reserve regulations.

Take all rubbish with you.

Respect reindeer husbandry and local land use.

Rules can differ between nature reserves, so always check the current information before visiting a specific location. Länsstyrelsen Dalarna provides information and regulations for the individual reserves.

Official information and useful maps

The Länsstyrelsen Dalarna visitor destination directory is particularly useful for checking nature reserves, regulations and access information.

The official information for Städjan-Nipfjället is the best starting point for the main mountain area.

For hiking information around Idre, Visit Dalarna’s Idre hiking guide is also useful.

Final thoughts

Idre is much more than a ski destination. For nature photographers, it is one of the most interesting bases in northern Dalarna because of the extraordinary variety of landscapes within a relatively small area.

Städjan and Nipfjället are the obvious highlights, and they absolutely deserve their reputation. But some of my favourite photography opportunities would be found away from the famous viewpoints: old spruce forests at Gränjåsen, ancient pines in Drevfjällen, reflections at Burusjön, flowing water at Fjätfallen and the atmospheric wetlands around Gryvelån.

If you have several days, expand your range to Fulufjället and Grövelsjön. Together they turn an Idre visit into an excellent Scandinavian nature photography road trip.

The biggest photography tip is simple: do not spend all your time chasing famous viewpoints. Give yourself time to walk, wait for interesting weather and look closely at the landscape. The best photograph from Idre might be a huge mountain panorama — but it might just as easily be a tiny patch of moss, a misty lake or an old pine tree glowing in evening light.

FAQ: Nature photography near Idre

What is the best photography location near Idre?

Städjan-Nipfjället is probably the best all-round photography location because it combines dramatic mountains, open alpine landscapes, lakes, forests and excellent accessibility.

Where can I photograph Städjan?

Nipfjället is one of the best places to photograph the distinctive Städjan silhouette. The mountain can also be photographed from different locations around the surrounding reserve.

Where is the best place for sunrise near Idre?

Nipfjället, Städjan and Burusjön are among the strongest choices. Arrive well before sunrise to explore compositions before the light appears.

Where can I photograph waterfalls near Idre?

Fjätfallen-Kryptjärn and Njupeskär are the two standout choices. Klingforsen is another option for rapids and flowing water.

Is Idre good for autumn photography?

Yes. Autumn is one of the best seasons for photography around Idre. Mountain birch, low vegetation, forests and mountain landscapes combine to create excellent colour and texture.

Can I photograph wildlife near Idre?

Yes. The surrounding mountains and forests provide opportunities for wildlife photography, including reindeer and forest birds. Grövelsjön, Drevfjällen, Drevdagen and Gryvelån are particularly interesting areas.

Is Städjan difficult to climb?

The final part of the route to Städjan is steep and rocky. Länsstyrelsen describes the last approximately 800 metres as a particularly steep ascent, with the final section requiring careful scrambling over blocks.

Can I photograph Idre in winter?

Yes, but winter requires significantly more preparation. Snow, ice and short daylight can create spectacular images, but access and hiking conditions can be considerably more difficult.

How many days do I need for photography in Idre?

Three days is a good starting point. With five days, you can comfortably combine Städjan-Nipfjället, waterfalls, old-growth forests, Fulufjället and Grövelsjön.

What lens should I bring to Idre?

A 24–70mm zoom is the most useful general-purpose lens. Add a wide-angle lens for dramatic landscapes and a telephoto for distant mountains and wildlife. A macro lens is excellent for forest details, flowers, mosses and lichens.

Fulufjället National Park is one of the best places in Sweden for landscape and nature photography.

The landscape is unusually diverse. Within the same photography trip you can photograph Sweden’s highest free-falling waterfall, ancient spruce and pine forest, enormous boulder fields, fjällbjörkskog, open mountain plateau, clear mountain lakes, waterfalls, deep valleys and one of the world’s oldest known trees.

The park is located in northern Dalarna, close to the Norwegian border, and protects a large, almost untouched mountain landscape. Fulufjället rises as a broad plateau with steep sides, while the mountain heath is covered by thick lichen because reindeer do not graze here. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

For photographers, Fulufjället is particularly interesting because the scenery changes dramatically with altitude.

At the lower elevations you have dark old-growth forest and rushing streams. Higher up, the trees become smaller and eventually disappear, leaving an enormous open plateau covered in lichen, heather and rocks.

The park’s most famous attractions are Njupeskär waterfall and Old Tjikko, but some of the best photographs can come from much less famous locations along the mountain trails.

This guide covers the best photo spots in Fulufjället National Park, including the classic viewpoints, the best trails, mountain landscapes, waterfalls, forests, lakes, sunrise and sunset locations, autumn photography and practical tips for planning a photography trip.

Why Fulufjället Is So Good for Photography

Fulufjället offers several landscapes that are rarely found together in one Swedish national park.

You can photograph:

Dramatic waterfalls

Deep gorges

Ancient spruce forest

Old pine trees

Fjällbirch

Open mountain heath

Mountain lakes

Rocky plateaus

Mountain streams

Wetlands

Mist

Snow and ice

Autumn colours

Lichen

Moss

Fungi

Birds

Wildlife

The national park contains 395 species of mosses and 421 species of lichens, making it particularly interesting for close-up nature photography as well as large landscapes. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

The lack of reindeer grazing also means the mountain plateau has unusually thick lichen carpets.

This creates a very distinctive foreground for landscape photography.

Best Time to Photograph Fulufjället

Autumn

Autumn is arguably the best season for a photography trip to Fulufjället.

The mountain birch turns yellow and orange, while the darker coniferous forest remains green.

The contrast between:

Yellow fjällbjörk

Green spruce

Dark pine

Grey rocks

Pale lichen

can produce spectacular compositions.

September is particularly attractive for the higher elevations, while the lower forest can continue to offer autumn colours later.

Summer

Summer is the easiest season for hiking the higher trails.

The mountain plateau becomes accessible without snow, and the long daylight hours give you enormous flexibility.

This is an excellent time for:

Sunrise

Sunset

Mountain landscapes

Waterfalls

Wildflowers

Macro photography

Spring

Spring arrives late at these elevations.

Snow can remain on the mountain for a long time, but the transition period can produce dramatic combinations of snow, exposed rocks, flowing water and emerging vegetation.

Winter

Winter turns Fulufjället into a completely different landscape.

Snow-covered mountains, frozen waterfalls, ice formations and snow-covered forests can produce spectacular minimalist photographs.

Winter photography requires much more planning, however.

Weather can change quickly and daylight is limited.

Best Time of Day for Photography

Sunrise

Sunrise is particularly rewarding on the mountain plateau.

The open landscape allows the first light to illuminate large areas of terrain.

It is also worth photographing Njupeskär around sunrise.

During a short period around midsummer, the early morning sun can reach deep into the waterfall gorge and illuminate the waterfall with a distinctive silver light. (Visit Dalarna)

Morning

Morning is excellent for:

Mist

Waterfalls

Forest

Wildlife

Mountain light

Backlit trees

Afternoon

Use harsh midday light for exploring.

Look for details rather than wide landscapes.

This is a good time for:

Lichen

Moss

Rocks

Fjällbjörk

Water

Old trees

Sunset

The open plateau is ideal for sunset photography.

The landscape can take on warm colours while the valleys become darker.

Blue Hour

Stay after sunset.

The broad plateau and mountain silhouettes can produce very clean blue-hour compositions.

The Best Photo Spots in Fulufjället National Park

1. Njupeskär Waterfall

Njupeskär is the obvious starting point for any photography trip to Fulufjället.

The waterfall is 93 metres high, with 70 metres of free fall, making it Sweden’s highest waterfall by free-fall height. Water has carved a deep gorge into the mountain over thousands of years. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

The waterfall is one of the most photographed places in the park, but there are several ways to photograph it.

The classic waterfall view

The trail from Naturum to Njupeskär is approximately 4 kilometres in total. The route is relatively easy, although sections become steeper and there are stairs closer to the waterfall. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

Don’t stop at the first obvious viewpoint.

Walk around and look for different foregrounds.

Try:

Rocks

Trees

The gorge

Flowing water

Autumn foliage

People for scale

Long exposure

A tripod is extremely useful.

Try shutter speeds from around 1/4 second to several seconds depending on the amount of light and how much movement you want in the water.

Don’t automatically use a 30-second exposure.

A shorter exposure can retain much more texture in the waterfall.

2. Njupeskär Gorge

The gorge itself can be just as interesting as the waterfall.

The huge rock walls create a dramatic natural frame around the falling water.

Use a wide-angle lens to exaggerate the scale.

But also try a telephoto lens.

Compressing the waterfall between the rock walls can produce a much more intimate composition.

Best conditions

Overcast weather can be excellent.

Cloudy conditions reduce the extreme contrast between the bright sky and dark gorge.

Rain can also make the waterfall considerably more impressive.

3. Njupeskärstugan Viewpoint

About 1.5 kilometres along the route to Njupeskär is a small rest cabin with a fireplace and a view towards the waterfall. (Länsstyrelsen)

This is an important stop for photographers.

The viewpoint gives you a different perspective from the final waterfall area.

Try using:

70–200mm

100–400mm

24–70mm

A telephoto lens can isolate the waterfall against the surrounding rock.

4. The Top of Njupeskär

If you continue upwards, you can reach the area above the waterfall.

The trail becomes much more demanding, steep and rocky.

The official hiking information warns that the terrain around the upper routes can be difficult, particularly when wet. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

From above, you can photograph the gorge from a completely different perspective.

This is one of the most interesting landscape compositions in Fulufjället.

Look for:

The gorge disappearing into the distance

Water flowing towards the edge

Rock formations

Open mountain terrain

Fjällbjörk

Distant landscapes

5. Old Tjikko

Old Tjikko is one of the most famous trees in Sweden.

The spruce has a root system estimated to be approximately 9,550 years old, making it one of the world’s oldest known individual clonal trees. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

The tree itself is not enormous or conventionally spectacular.

That is exactly why it can be an interesting photographic challenge.

Instead of simply photographing the tree as a documentary subject, photograph it as part of the landscape.

Composition ideas

Try:

Old Tjikko against the mountain plateau

Tree and surrounding rocks

Tree with low clouds

Tree with autumn colours

Detail of the trunk

Wide environmental portrait

The official hiking map places Old Tjikko approximately 3 km one way from the starting point via Njupeskärstugan and Jaktfalksleden. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

The route to Old Tjikko becomes rocky and can be slippery when wet.

6. The Mountain Plateau

The open plateau is one of the most important photographic landscapes in Fulufjället.

Once you leave the forest behind, the landscape becomes enormous.

There are few trees to block the view.

This is where you should use:

Wide-angle lenses

Telephoto compression

Minimalist compositions

Strong foregrounds

The plateau is covered in thick lichen mats because reindeer do not graze here. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

This creates excellent foreground textures.

Photography tip

Don’t automatically photograph everything with a 14mm lens.

A 70–200mm or similar telephoto can be much more interesting.

Look for:

Layers of mountains

Isolated rocks

Fjällbjörk

Clouds

Valleys

Distant ridges

7. Rösjön

Rösjön is one of the best mountain-lake locations in Fulufjället.

It can be reached via the Rösjöleden, with the shortest loop around Lilla Rösjön being approximately 9 kilometres from the main entrance area according to current park information. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

The lake provides excellent opportunities for:

Reflections

Sunrise

Sunset

Mist

Mountain silhouettes

Autumn colours

Best conditions

Early morning is the obvious choice.

If there is no wind, the water can become almost perfectly reflective.

8. Rösjöstugorna

The cabins around Rösjön create another interesting photographic element.

Instead of only photographing wilderness, you can include the simple mountain cabins in the landscape.

This works particularly well during:

Autumn

Snow

Fog

Sunrise

Blue hour

Use the cabins as foreground subjects and the mountain landscape as the background.

9. Lilla Rösjön

Lilla Rösjön is particularly good for intimate landscape photography.

Smaller mountain lakes can often produce better compositions than huge open landscapes because there are fewer visual distractions.

Look for:

Shoreline reflections

Rocks

Fjällbjörk

Small islands

Mist

Mountain silhouettes

A 24–70mm lens is ideal.

10. Harrsjön

Harrsjön is one of the more remote photographic destinations on the Rösjöleden.

The longer Rösjöleden route passes Harrsjön and provides an opportunity to experience a much wilder part of the mountain landscape. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

This is a location for photographers who enjoy getting away from the main attractions.

What to photograph

Look for:

Mountain lake

Fjällbjörk

Open plateau

Wetlands

Rocks

Reflections

Mist

If you are carrying a tripod and several lenses, allow plenty of time.

11. Lorthån

Lorthån is another excellent destination for photographers looking for quieter landscapes.

The Rösjöleden route towards Lorthån passes through fjällbjörkskog and follows streams. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

This makes the route particularly interesting for photographers because you get a combination of:

Mountain forest

Streams

Open terrain

Rocks

Water

Fjällbjörk

Rather than focusing only on the final destination, photograph the journey.

12. Jaktfalksleden

Jaktfalksleden is one of the more challenging routes in the park.

The current park map describes it as approximately 6 kilometres and warns that it can be very difficult, particularly after rain, because sections involve walking over rocks for several kilometres. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

For photographers, however, difficult terrain can mean fewer people and more opportunities for untouched compositions.

The route is particularly useful for accessing:

Old Tjikko

Higher mountain terrain

Rocky landscapes

Njupeskär viewpoints

Good hiking footwear is essential.

13. Göljådalen

Göljådalen is one of the most interesting valleys in Fulufjället.

The landscape was dramatically affected by the extreme rainfall event of August 1997, when more than 400 mm of rain fell in 12 hours. (Fulufjellet National Park)

The resulting landscape provides fascinating photographic subjects.

Look for:

Eroded terrain

Streams

Forest

Fallen trees

Valley landscapes

Water

This is an excellent location if you enjoy landscape photography with a geological or environmental story.

14. Göljå Valley Waterfalls

The watercourses around Göljådalen can produce beautiful intimate landscape photographs.

Instead of looking for a huge waterfall, look for smaller cascades.

Use:

Tripod

Polarizer

24–70mm lens

Try exposures around 1/2–2 seconds to retain texture in the flowing water.

15. Tangådalen

Tangådalen is another major landscape contrast in the Fulufjället area.

The valley contains lush vegetation and a wild landscape that cuts through the surrounding mountain terrain. (Fulufjellet National Park)

For photographers, this provides opportunities for:

Valley landscapes

River photography

Forest

Mountain views

Autumn colours

Wildlife

It is a particularly good area if you want photographs that show the relationship between the mountain and the lower valleys.

16. Altarringen

Altarringen is a ring of stones on the Fulufjället plateau and one of the park’s listed attractions. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

It is an unusual subject because the landscape around it is so open.

Use the stone ring as a foreground element.

Then compose:

Mountain horizon

Clouds

Sunset

Sunrise

Fog

This is a good place for minimalist photography.

17. Fjällbjörkskogen

The transition zone between the forest and open mountain is one of the most photogenic areas in Fulufjället.

Fjällbirch trees have unusual shapes and can become excellent foreground subjects.

Look for:

Twisted trunks

Isolated trees

Groups of birch

Autumn colours

Mist

Snow-covered branches

A telephoto lens works extremely well.

Compress groups of trees together to create layered compositions.

18. Ancient Spruce Forest

The old-growth forest below the plateau is another major photographic attraction.

The national park protects extensive old forest, including old spruce and pine. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

Some of the trees are several hundred years old.

In this environment, don’t search for a single landmark.

Look for atmosphere.

Photograph

Moss-covered trunks

Old spruce

Dead wood

Ferns

Forest floor

Roots

Mist

Backlighting

Foggy weather can make this forest extraordinary.

19. Storfurua

Storfurua is an ancient pine on the Norwegian side of the Fulufjället area.

It is listed among the area’s natural attractions and can be reached as a detour from the Bergådalen–Slottet route. (Länsstyrelsen)

This is technically across the border in Norway, so don’t confuse it with Old Tjikko in the Swedish national park.

For a photography road trip, however, it can be a worthwhile extension.

20. Bråtafallet

Bråtafallet is another Norwegian-side attraction associated with the Fulufjellet landscape.

The waterfall drops through horizontal sandstone layers, creating a distinctive geological landscape. (Fulufjellet National Park)

If you are planning a broader Fulufjället photography road trip, this is an excellent location to add.

The layered sandstone gives the waterfall a very different appearance from Njupeskär.

Best Instagram Spots in Fulufjället

For the most distinctive photographs, prioritize:

Njupeskär waterfall

Njupeskär gorge

The top of Njupeskär

Old Tjikko

Rösjön

Lilla Rösjön

Rösjöstugorna

The open mountain plateau

Altarringen

Fjällbjörkskogen

Göljådalen

Tangådalen

Jaktfalksleden

Mountain streams

Ancient forest

Best Sunrise Photo Spots

Njupeskär

Excellent in the early morning, especially around midsummer when sunlight can reach into the gorge.

Rösjön

Probably one of the best choices for reflections.

Lilla Rösjön

Excellent for intimate mountain landscapes.

Mountain plateau

Ideal for broad sunrise panoramas.

Fjällbjörkskogen

Beautiful when the first light catches the birch trees.

Best Sunset Photo Spots

The open plateau is your best option for sunset.

The landscape is open enough to allow you to work with:

Low sunlight

Long shadows

Clouds

Silhouettes

Mountain layers

Altarringen can also work well as a foreground subject.

At the lakes, look for reflections during the final minutes of daylight.

Best Autumn Photography Spots

If autumn colours are your priority, focus on:

Njupeskär Valley

The waterfall and gorge surrounded by changing vegetation create a strong combination.

Fjällbjörkskogen

Probably the most obvious autumn photography environment.

Rösjön

Yellow vegetation around the lake can reflect beautifully in calm water.

Lorthån

Excellent for combining autumn birch with streams and mountain terrain.

Tangådalen

A good choice for broader autumn landscapes.

Best Winter Photography Spots

Winter photography in Fulufjället is for experienced outdoor photographers.

The best subjects include:

Njupeskär ice

Snow-covered forest

Frozen streams

Fjällbjörk

Mountain plateau

Snow-covered cabins

Frost

Snowdrifts

The waterfall can become particularly dramatic when ice forms around it.

However, winter access, weather and daylight need to be taken seriously.

Macro Photography in Fulufjället

Fulufjället is excellent for macro photography.

The park has an enormous diversity of mosses and lichens, with 395 moss species and 421 lichen species recorded. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

Bring a macro lens and look for:

Lichens

Moss

Fungi

Mountain flowers

Small insects

Water droplets

Bark

Rocks

A 90mm macro lens is particularly useful because it gives you enough working distance while still allowing very detailed compositions.

Wildlife Photography

Fulufjället is home to a range of mountain and forest wildlife.

Possible subjects include:

Moose

Reindeer-related mountain species

Birds

Capercaillie

Grouse

Raptors

Smaller mammals

The Norwegian side of the wider Fulufjellet area is also known for large moose and contains populations of large predators. (Fulufjellet National Park)

Don’t approach wildlife for photographs.

Use a telephoto lens and allow the animal to determine the distance.

Bird Photography

Bird photographers should concentrate on:

Forest edges

Mountain birch

Wetlands

Lakes

Open plateau

Early morning is best.

Listen before you start walking.

How Difficult Is Photography in Fulufjället?

The easy route to Njupeskär is manageable for many visitors.

The trails higher on the mountain are a different story.

The current official hiking map describes Jaktfalksleden as difficult, with several kilometres over rocky terrain. The route to Old Tjikko also becomes rocky and can be slippery when wet. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

This is the best approach if photography is the main purpose of the trip.

How to Get to Fulufjället National Park

The main Swedish entrance is at Naturum Fulufjället, near Njupeskär.

This is the most convenient starting point if your primary goal is photographing the waterfall.

The official park information identifies Naturum as the main entrance and starting point for several trails. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

Other access points are useful if you want to explore the more remote parts of the park.

The official map shows access from areas including Mörkret, Gördalen and other trailheads around the mountain.
Fulufjället is a national park and contains sensitive wildlife habitats.

Check the current rules and restrictions before every flight.

For many landscape photographs, a telephoto lens from the ground can provide an excellent alternative to aerial photography.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Fulufjället National Park good for photography?

Yes. Fulufjället is one of Sweden’s most diverse photography destinations, combining waterfalls, mountains, old-growth forest, lakes, wetlands, fjällbjörk and open plateau landscapes.

What is the best photo spot in Fulufjället?

Njupeskär is the obvious first choice, but the mountain plateau and Rösjön can produce more distinctive landscape photographs.

What is the most famous photography location?

Njupeskär waterfall is the park’s most famous photographic attraction.

Is Njupeskär Sweden’s highest waterfall?

Njupeskär is 93 metres high and has a free fall of 70 metres, making it the waterfall with the highest free fall in Sweden. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

How long is the walk to Njupeskär?

The trail from Naturum to the waterfall is approximately 4 kilometres in total. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

Can I photograph Old Tjikko?

Yes, but remember that the tree is protected and should be treated with particular care. Old Tjikko is located on the mountain above Njupeskär and the route becomes rocky and demanding. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

How old is Old Tjikko?

Its root system is estimated to be approximately 9,550 years old. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

Is Fulufjället good for autumn photography?

Absolutely. Autumn is one of the best times to photograph the combination of golden fjällbjörk, dark coniferous forest, lichen-covered mountain terrain and mountain lakes.

Where should I photograph sunrise?

Rösjön, Lilla Rösjön, the open mountain plateau and Njupeskär are excellent choices.

Where should I photograph sunset?

The open mountain plateau is probably the best choice because it gives you an unobstructed view of the sky and surrounding landscape.

Is Fulufjället difficult to hike?

The route to Njupeskär is relatively manageable, but some higher mountain trails are difficult. Jaktfalksleden includes several kilometres of rocky terrain and can be particularly difficult after rain. (Sveriges Nationalparker)

Can I photograph Fulufjället with children?

Is Fulufjället good for macro photography?

Yes. The park has an exceptional diversity of mosses and lichens, making it an excellent destination for macro photography.
What lens should I bring?

A 24–70mm should be your main lens. Add a wide-angle lens for Njupeskär and large landscapes, a telephoto for mountain compression and wildlife, and a macro lens for moss, lichens and fungi.

Is a tripod necessary?

Not necessary, but highly recommended. It is especially useful for Njupeskär, mountain lakes, sunrise, sunset, blue hour and macro photography.

Can I photograph Fulufjället in winter?

Yes. Winter creates spectacular snow and ice landscapes, but conditions are much more demanding and require proper winter equipment and planning.

How many days do I need?

One day is enough for Njupeskär. Two days are much better if you want to photograph Old Tjikko and the mountain plateau. Three days allows you to explore the Rösjöområdet or another remote part of the park without rushing.

Final Photography Tips

Fulufjället rewards photographers who slow down.

The obvious photograph is Njupeskär.

Take it.

But don’t leave immediately.

Photograph the gorge.

Photograph the rocks.

Photograph the forest.

Look for water flowing through the landscape.

Then climb higher.

The landscape changes dramatically as you leave the trees behind.

Eventually the forest disappears and you are standing on a huge open plateau covered in lichen.

This is where Fulufjället becomes something completely different.

Use a wide-angle lens when the clouds and landscape are dramatic.

Switch to a telephoto when the atmosphere creates layers.

Use a macro lens when the weather turns bad.

And if you get mist, don’t pack away your camera.

Mist is one of the best conditions you can have in Fulufjället.

For photographers, the real attraction of this national park is not just one waterfall or one ancient tree.

It is the combination of waterfalls, ancient forest, mountain lakes, fjällbjörk, open plateau and constantly changing weather.

That makes Fulufjället one of the most rewarding landscape photography destinations in Sweden.
