Deep in the forests of Småland, far from major roads and tourist crowds, lies one of the finest remaining areas of old-growth forest in southern Sweden. Ancient pine trees, moss-covered boulders, pristine forest lakes and winding trails create a landscape that feels untouched by time.
While many visitors focus on larger Swedish national parks such as Store Mosse, Skuleskogen or Abisko, Norra Kvill offers something different. This is not a destination for dramatic mountain scenery or famous viewpoints. Instead, it is a place to experience silence, wilderness and the atmosphere of a true ancient forest.
For nature lovers, hikers, photographers and anyone seeking a peaceful escape, Norra Kvill is one of the most rewarding national parks in southern Sweden.

Getting there is part of the adventure. The final stretch follows increasingly narrow forest roads through remote woodlands before eventually reaching the national park entrance.
My Visit to Norra Kvill
I spent one night in Norra Kvill during August and it quickly became one of my favourite national park experiences in southern Sweden.
The journey itself felt like an adventure. The roads became smaller and smaller as I drove deeper into the forests of Småland. Eventually it felt as though I had left civilisation behind and entered a landscape dominated entirely by forest.
The drive was absolutely worth it.
The combination of ancient woodland, giant pines and beautiful lakes makes Norra Kvill unlike anywhere else I have visited in southern Sweden.
Sunset at Stora Idgölen
On my first evening I walked down to Stora Idgölen, the larger of the park’s lakes.
The conditions were perfect.
As the sun began to set, warm evening light illuminated the forest while reflections formed across the calm lake surface. It was one of those peaceful moments that remind you why small and remote national parks can sometimes be more rewarding than the famous destinations.
For photographers, Stora Idgölen is easily one of the highlights of the entire park.

Sleeping at the National Park
I spent the night sleeping comfortably in my car at the parking area.
Unlike larger national parks with visitor centres, cafés and extensive facilities, Norra Kvill is intentionally simple.
Facilities include:
- Parking area
- Dry toilet
- Information boards
- Fire pit
- Tent area
That’s about it.
Personally, I loved this simplicity. The park feels smaller, quieter and more intimate than many of Sweden’s larger national parks.
Hiking Through Ancient Forest
One of the things that impressed me most was the forest itself.
The boardwalks and trails pass through genuine old-growth woodland filled with:
- Ancient pine trees
- Fallen logs
- Giant moss-covered boulders
- Ferns
- Lichens
- Dense forest vegetation
Many sections feel like a fairy-tale forest.
The huge glacial boulders scattered throughout the forest create some of the most photogenic scenes in the park.
Morning Hike to the Viewpoint
The following morning I completed the longer trail around the smaller lake and up to the viewpoint at Idhöjden.
This turned out to be my favourite hike in the park.
The route offered a wonderful variety of scenery:

- Rolling terrain
- Elevated viewpoints
The hike never felt difficult, but it was far more varied than I expected.
At the top of Idhöjden, the forest canopy stretched across the landscape and provided one of the best views in the national park.

Accessibility
All of the hikes I completed were relatively easy and suitable for most visitors with a reasonable level of fitness.
However, the trails are not suitable for strollers due to:

- Rocks
- Uneven terrain
- Boardwalks
- Elevation changes
Families with very young children should keep this in mind when planning a visit.
