Unlike some of Sweden’s larger birding hotspots, Kvismaren is relatively easy to access and offers several observation towers, platforms and hides that allow photographers to get close to the action without disturbing wildlife. Whether you are interested in migration photography, wetland landscapes or photographing birds in beautiful golden light, Kvismaren deserves a place on your photography bucket list.

Why Kvismaren Is One of Sweden’s Best Bird Photography Locations

Kvismaren consists of shallow lakes, reedbeds, wet meadows and restored wetlands that provide ideal habitat for birds throughout the year.

What makes Kvismaren particularly attractive for photographers is the combination of:

Large numbers of birds

Accessible observation points

Beautiful wetland scenery

Excellent sunrise and sunset conditions

Opportunities for flight photography

Seasonal migration spectacles

Relatively few crowds compared to some famous birding locations

The reserve records more than 200 bird species annually and regularly attracts birdwatchers and photographers from across Sweden.

Best Time for Bird Photography at Kvismaren

March to May

Spring is one of the most exciting times to visit.

Migrating birds arrive in huge numbers and the wetlands become full of activity.

Photographic highlights include:

Cranes

Geese

Whooper swans

Marsh harriers

Ducks

Grebes

Waders

Morning light can be spectacular as mist rises from the wetlands.

June to August

Summer offers different opportunities.

You won’t see the massive migration numbers of spring and autumn, but you can photograph:

Breeding birds

Herons

Marsh harriers

Dragonflies

Wetland landscapes

September to October

For many photographers, autumn is the best season.

Thousands of cranes and geese gather before migration, creating opportunities for dramatic flight photography and large flock behaviour.

Sunset sessions can be especially rewarding as birds move toward their evening roosts.

November to February

Winter is quieter but still worthwhile.

You may encounter:

White-tailed eagles

Rough-legged buzzards

Winter landscapes

Frost-covered reeds

Bird Species You Can Photograph

Cranes

Kvismaren is one of the best places in central Sweden to photograph cranes during migration.

The most impressive gatherings typically occur in spring and autumn.

Geese

Large numbers of geese are often present, particularly during migration periods.

Species can include:

Greylag Goose

Bean Goose

Canada Goose

Barnacle Goose

Grey Herons

Herons are among the easiest large birds to photograph in Kvismaren and are often seen hunting in shallow water.

Marsh Harriers

One of the reserve’s signature birds.

Watching marsh harriers glide low over the reedbeds can create fantastic action shots.

White-tailed Eagles

Although not guaranteed, white-tailed eagles are regularly seen in the area and can provide unforgettable photographic opportunities.

Ducks and Waterfowl

Kvismaren is excellent for photographing:

Northern Shoveler

Gadwall

Teal

Mallard

Eurasian Wigeon

Tufted Duck

Best Photography Locations in Kvismaren

Öby Kulle

The main visitor area and the best place to start your visit.

The hill provides:

Parking

Information boards

Great views

Picnic facilities

It is also a useful location for landscape photography overlooking the wetlands.

Google Maps:
https://maps.google.com/?q=Öby+Kulle+Kvismaren

Rysjön Bird Tower

If you only visit one photography location in Kvismaren, make it Rysjön.

The large bird tower offers the best overview of the wetland and excellent opportunities for observing birds.

Photograph:

Cranes

Geese

Herons

Ducks

Marsh harriers

Wetland landscapes

Google Maps:
https://maps.google.com/?q=Rysjön+Kvismaren

Rysjön Hide

The hide overlooking Rysjön can provide excellent opportunities when water levels and vegetation conditions are favourable.

Visibility varies depending on the season.

Observation Platform

The observation platform can offer different viewing angles over the wetlands.

Access restrictions may apply during sensitive periods for nesting birds.

Always follow local regulations and posted signs.

Fiskinge

Known for migration activity, especially cranes and geese during autumn.

The meadows can become very active around sunset.

My Visit to Kvismaren

I visited Kvismaren in August.

Although spring and September are generally considered the best times for bird photography, there were still plenty of birds around during my visit.

Most of the birds I saw were geese, but I also encountered:

Cranes

Grey herons

Birds of prey

Various wetland birds

The best place to park is definitely Öby Kulle. The viewpoint overlooking the wetlands is excellent and there are picnic and barbecue facilities available. The only drawback is that it is quite far from some of the eastern sections of Kvismaren.

For photographers looking to get closer to the birds, the Rysjön area is the place to focus your efforts.

Within a short walk from the parking area you will find:

The large bird tower

An observation platform

A bird hide

During my visit, the bird tower was by far the most rewarding location.

The hide has great potential and may be excellent during certain seasons. However, when I visited, the reeds had grown high enough to block much of the view, making photography difficult.

I attempted to walk to the observation platform further into Kvismaren, but after some distance I encountered signs indicating that access beyond that point was prohibited, so I had to turn back.

I also visited Lövholmen and the small bird tower located there. Compared with Rysjön, I did not find it particularly rewarding and would not prioritise it if you only have a limited amount of time in the reserve.

I did not visit the bird tower at Fiskinge, so I cannot personally comment on the views from there.

My Best Photography Tip

If you want the best chance of capturing strong images, head to the large bird tower at Rysjön around sunset.

The warm evening light, increased bird activity and beautiful wetland scenery made this the most productive location of my visit and the place where I captured my favourite photographs.

Best Conditions for Photography

Sunrise

Advantages:

Calm conditions

Mist over the wetlands

Soft light

Active birds

Sunset

Advantages:

Golden light

Flight photography

Returning flocks

Dramatic skies

Based on my visit, sunset at the Rysjön bird tower is one of the best photography opportunities in Kvismaren.

Suggested Photography Plan

Sunrise Session

Start at Öby Kulle and move toward Rysjön.

Midday

Explore additional observation points and look for raptors.

Afternoon

Visit Fiskinge and migration areas.

Sunset

Position yourself at the large Rysjön bird tower.

Other Great Bird Photography Locations in Sweden

With its diverse landscapes—from coastal wetlands to boreal forests and alpine tundra—this Scandinavian gem offers some of the best birdwatching and photography opportunities in Europe. This guide highlights the top 10 bird photography spots in Sweden, including the best times to visit, what species to expect, precise locations within each area, and tips for capturing award-winning shots.

1. Hjälstaviken Nature Reserve

Best Time to Visit: March to May for migrating geese, ducks, and waders. Autumn is excellent for cranes and raptors.

Where to Go: Start at the Hårby parking lot. From there, take the boardwalk trail through the reeds to the birdwatching tower for the best elevated views of the wetlands.

Photography Tips: Visit during early morning light. Capture flocks of feeding ducks and geese, as well as dramatic silhouettes of cranes at sunset. Bring a 300–600mm lens.

Best Parking Spot: Hårby parking lot

Wild Camping: Allowed under Allemansrätten in designated areas. Avoid camping in the parking lot.

2. Hornborgasjön

Best Time to Visit: Late March to mid-April when tens of thousands of cranes gather.

Where to Go: The best location is Trandansen, on the lake’s southwestern edge. Another great spot is Naturum Hornborgasjön for hides and interpretive trails.

Photography Tips: Use a tripod for distant cranes. Capture interaction, dance displays, and flight with a fast shutter speed.

Best Parking Spot: Trandansen and Naturum parking lots

Wild Camping: Not allowed. Use official campsites like Axevalla nearby.

3. Stora Karlsö

Best Time to Visit: May to July for puffins, razorbills, and guillemots.

Where to Go: The island cliffs and rock outcrops are best accessed via guided tours. The western cliffs offer close views of seabird colonies.

Photography Tips: Use low angles for cliff shots. Capture puffins with nesting material. A 70–200mm lens with teleconverter works well.

Best Parking Spot: Ferry terminal at Klintehamn

Wild Camping: Not permitted. Stay in guesthouses or cabins.

4. Getterön Nature Reserve

Best Time to Visit: Year-round. Spring and fall offer peak migration.

Where to Go: Begin at the Naturum Getterön visitor center. Several hides are placed along the walking trail that loops through the wetlands.

Photography Tips: Ideal for waders, ducks, and gulls. Use hide windows for low angles. Bring a beanbag or tripod for support.

Best Parking Spot: Large lot beside Naturum Getterön

Wild Camping: Not allowed in the reserve. Camp at Varberg Camping nearby.

5. Tärnasjön (Kungsleden Trail)

General FAQ

Can I wild camp anywhere in Sweden while birdwatching?
Sweden’s Right of Public Access (Allemansrätten) allows wild camping for one night in most natural areas. Respect private land, avoid nesting zones, and leave no trace.

Do all bird sites in Sweden have bird hides or towers?
Most top sites do, especially nature reserves and wetlands. Hides are ideal for low disturbance and better angles.

What lens should I bring for bird photography in Sweden?
A 400–600mm lens is ideal. A fast zoom like 100–400mm is versatile for hides and trails. Bring a tripod or monopod. I have just bought a 400-800 and will enjoy the extra reach instead of the 300/2.8 I used earlier.

Is it safe to park overnight in remote birdwatching areas?
Generally yes, but always check local signage. Avoid blocking access roads or parking in wildlife-sensitive zones.

Can I visit these sites with a camper van?
Yes! Many locations offer parking for camper vans, but not all allow overnight stays. Use nearby campsites where wild camping isn’t permitted.
