Kvismaren is one of the best bird photography destinations in central Sweden. Located just southeast of Örebro, this internationally important wetland attracts thousands of birds during spring and autumn migration and offers photographers excellent opportunities to capture cranes, geese, herons, marsh harriers, ducks, swans and many other species.
Unlike some of Sweden’s larger birding hotspots, Kvismaren is relatively easy to access and offers several observation towers, platforms and hides that allow photographers to get close to the action without disturbing wildlife. Whether you are interested in migration photography, wetland landscapes or photographing birds in beautiful golden light, Kvismaren deserves a place on your photography bucket list.
Why Kvismaren Is One of Sweden’s Best Bird Photography Locations
Kvismaren consists of shallow lakes, reedbeds, wet meadows and restored wetlands that provide ideal habitat for birds throughout the year.

Best Time for Bird Photography at Kvismaren
March to May
Spring is one of the most exciting times to visit.
Migrating birds arrive in huge numbers and the wetlands become full of activity.

Morning light can be spectacular as mist rises from the wetlands.
June to August

For many photographers, autumn is the best season.
Thousands of cranes and geese gather before migration, creating opportunities for dramatic flight photography and large flock behaviour.

Cranes
Kvismaren is one of the best places in central Sweden to photograph cranes during migration.
The most impressive gatherings typically occur in spring and autumn.

Öby Kulle
The main visitor area and the best place to start your visit.
The hill provides:

If you only visit one photography location in Kvismaren, make it Rysjön.
The large bird tower offers the best overview of the wetland and excellent opportunities for observing birds.

Rysjön Hide
The hide overlooking Rysjön can provide excellent opportunities when water levels and vegetation conditions are favourable.
Visibility varies depending on the season.
Observation Platform
The observation platform can offer different viewing angles over the wetlands.
Access restrictions may apply during sensitive periods for nesting birds.
Always follow local regulations and posted signs.
Fiskinge
Known for migration activity, especially cranes and geese during autumn.
The meadows can become very active around sunset.
My Visit to Kvismaren
I visited Kvismaren in August.
Although spring and September are generally considered the best times for bird photography, there were still plenty of birds around during my visit.
Most of the birds I saw were geese, but I also encountered:
- Cranes
- Grey herons
- Birds of prey
- Various wetland birds
The best place to park is definitely Öby Kulle. The viewpoint overlooking the wetlands is excellent and there are picnic and barbecue facilities available. The only drawback is that it is quite far from some of the eastern sections of Kvismaren.
For photographers looking to get closer to the birds, the Rysjön area is the place to focus your efforts.
Within a short walk from the parking area you will find:
- The large bird tower
- An observation platform
- A bird hide
During my visit, the bird tower was by far the most rewarding location.
The hide has great potential and may be excellent during certain seasons. However, when I visited, the reeds had grown high enough to block much of the view, making photography difficult.
I attempted to walk to the observation platform further into Kvismaren, but after some distance I encountered signs indicating that access beyond that point was prohibited, so I had to turn back.
I also visited Lövholmen and the small bird tower located there. Compared with Rysjön, I did not find it particularly rewarding and would not prioritise it if you only have a limited amount of time in the reserve.
I did not visit the bird tower at Fiskinge, so I cannot personally comment on the views from there.
My Best Photography Tip
If you want the best chance of capturing strong images, head to the large bird tower at Rysjön around sunset.
The warm evening light, increased bird activity and beautiful wetland scenery made this the most productive location of my visit and the place where I captured my favourite photographs.
