Berat is one of the most photogenic cities in the Balkans. While most visitors focus on sunset from the castle, sunrise is when the city truly shines. Soft golden light illuminates the famous Ottoman houses, morning mist sometimes lingers over the Osum River and the streets remain almost completely empty.
For photographers, sunrise offers the best opportunity to capture Berat’s UNESCO-listed old town without crowds while enjoying beautiful light on the city’s iconic “thousand windows.”

Why Sunrise Is Better Than Sunset in Berat
Most visitors head to Berat Castle for sunset.
That means:
- More crowds
- Harsher contrast
- More photographers competing for viewpoints
At sunrise you get:
- Soft light
- Empty streets
- Better reflections
- Cooler temperatures
- Possible morning fog
- More atmospheric photos
The famous white Ottoman houses of Mangalem catch the first light beautifully while the surrounding mountains create depth in the background. (frewaphoto.com)
Gorica Hill Viewpoint
Google Maps:
https://maps.google.com/?q=Gorica+Hill+Berat
This is my favorite sunrise location in Berat.
Located above the Gorica Quarter, the viewpoint overlooks the Osum River, Mangalem and Berat Castle.
From here you can capture the classic “City of a Thousand Windows” composition with beautiful morning light falling across the hillside. It is widely regarded as one of the best sunrise viewpoints in the city. (frewaphoto.com)
What to Photograph
- Mangalem Quarter
- Osum River
- Morning mist
- Castle skyline
- Sunrise colors
Best Time
Arrive 30–45 minutes before sunrise.
Blue hour often produces some of the best images before the sun even appears.
Instagram Shot
Use the river as a leading line toward the illuminated Ottoman houses.
Berat Castle Southern Viewpoint
Google Maps:
https://maps.google.com/?q=Berat+Castle
Most people visit the castle at sunset.
Few photographers visit at dawn.
This is a mistake.
The southern section of the castle provides one of the most spectacular views in Albania, overlooking Mangalem, Gorica and the Osum Valley. Morning light often illuminates the Gorica side first, creating excellent depth in landscape compositions. (Albania Spirit)
What to Photograph
- City panorama
- Mountains
- River valley
- Historic architecture
Best Time
20 minutes before sunrise until one hour after sunrise.
Photography Tip
Stay longer than most visitors. As the sun rises higher, the light gradually moves across the city creating different compositions.
The Castle Walls
Google Maps:
https://maps.google.com/?q=Berat+Castle+Walls
The castle itself is one of the most photogenic locations in Albania.
Ancient walls, cobblestone streets, churches and Ottoman houses create endless compositions. The castle remains inhabited, giving it a unique atmosphere compared to many European fortresses. (Lonely Planet)
Best Sunrise Subjects
- Fortress walls
- Stone streets
- Historic houses
- Church architecture
- Golden light
Why Visit Early
You may have many parts of the castle entirely to yourself.
Holy Trinity Church
Google Maps:
https://maps.google.com/?q=Holy+Trinity+Church+Berat
This small Byzantine church is one of the most photographed buildings in Berat.
Located on a hillside below the castle walls, it looks particularly beautiful during early morning light. (frewaphoto.com)
What to Photograph
- Historic architecture
- Mountain backdrop
- Stone textures
- Sunrise light
Best Time
Shortly after sunrise when warm light reaches the church.
Gorica Bridge
Google Maps:
https://maps.google.com/?q=Gorica+Bridge+Berat
The famous stone bridge is one of the best locations for reflection photography.
During sunrise the Osum River is often calmer than later in the day, creating beautiful mirror-like conditions. Early morning is also recommended for photography because of the softer light and fewer people. (frewaphoto.com)
What to Photograph
- Reflections
- Bridge architecture
- Mangalem Quarter
- Blue hour scenes
Best Time
Blue hour through sunrise.
Instagram Shot
Position yourself slightly downstream and include both the bridge and Mangalem in the frame.
Gorica Riverside
Google Maps:
https://maps.google.com/?q=Gorica+Quarter+Berat
Many photographers photograph Mangalem from the bridge and leave.
Walk further along the Gorica riverbank.
This side of the river provides some of the cleanest views of Berat’s famous Ottoman houses and often produces better compositions than the bridge itself. (Dalim)
What to Photograph
- Mangalem skyline
- River reflections
- Castle above the city
- Morning light
Mangalem Streets
Google Maps:
https://maps.google.com/?q=Mangalem+Quarter+Berat
One of the greatest advantages of sunrise is having Mangalem almost completely to yourself.
The steep stone streets become much more photogenic without crowds.
What to Photograph
- Ottoman windows
- Staircases
- Stone alleys
- Local life
- Architectural details
Best Time
Immediately after sunrise.
The first rays of light entering the narrow streets often create dramatic shadows and textures. (frewaphoto.com)
Tabia Viewpoint
Google Maps:
https://maps.google.com/?q=Tabia+Viewpoint+Berat
This lesser-known viewpoint south of the castle is considered by many locals to be one of the best panoramic viewpoints in Berat. (Visit Berat – Tourism Platform of Berat)
