If you’re visiting Valborg in Uppsala with children, you’ll find plenty of family-friendly activities to enjoy away from the wilder student parties. Here’s what you shouldn’t miss:
🧺 Family Picnic in Stadsträdgården
When: All day, especially from 10:00 AM onwards
Where: Stadsträdgården Park
Bring a picnic basket and enjoy a relaxed day under the blooming trees. There are open spaces perfect for kids to run around and many families organize games like soccer or frisbee.
Tip:
Get there early to grab a good shady spot, and bring a blanket or folding chairs.
🔥 Small Bonfires and Choir Singing
When: 8:00–9:00 PM
Where: Gamla Uppsala, Ekolnsnäs, and community bonfires
Instead of the bigger, rowdier city-center parties, join a family-oriented bonfire with traditional spring choirs singing songs like “Vintern rasat ut”.
Tip:
Check local community centers for smaller gatherings perfect for younger children.
🍔 Barbecue in a Garden or at some friends
The many Gardens offers plenty of picnic spots and sometimes community grills where families gather for Valborg barbecues.
Tip:
Bring your own charcoal and food supplies, and enjoy the beautiful surroundings while the kids explore.
👀 Best Places to Watch the River Rafting (Forsränningen)
Forsränningen is one of the absolute highlights of Valborg in Uppsala. It is very crowded and you need to be there at least 30 minutes before it starts to get an ok place to see anything. The best spots are taken much earlier — but where should you stand for the best views? Here’s your insider’s guide:
🌉 1. Islandsbron Bridge
Why:
This bridge offers a front-row view of the students riding their hilarious homemade rafts down the rapids.
Tips:
- Arrive by 9:00 AM to secure a good spot.
- Bring snacks and water — once you’re in place, you won’t want to leave!
🌿 2. Fyrisån Riverbank (near Stadsträdgården)
Why:
Ideal for families or those wanting a more relaxed atmosphere while still enjoying the spectacle.
Tips:
- Bring folding chairs or a picnic mat.
- Stay for the afterparty atmosphere when the rafting ends!
🏛 3. Carolinabacken (Carolina Hill)
Why:
Although primarily famous for the spring speeches at noon, Carolina Hill also provides a panoramic view of the crowds gathering by the river. But it is to far to see any of the boats.
Tips:
- Perfect if you want to experience both the rafting and the university’s traditional celebrations without moving too far.
