For photographers, Gjirokastër offers something that is increasingly difficult to find in heavily visited European destinations: an old town that still feels genuinely lived in.

Spring
Spring is one of my favorite seasons for Gjirokastër photography.
The surrounding hills become green, flowers appear around the old houses and the temperatures are much more comfortable than during the summer.
Morning light is particularly beautiful.
Summer
Summer provides long days and warm evening light, but the middle of the day can be extremely hot.
For photography, concentrate on:
- Early morning
- Late afternoon
- Sunset
- Blue hour
Avoid spending hours walking the steep streets around midday.
Autumn
Autumn is another excellent season.
The lower angle of the sun creates beautiful warm light on the stone houses, while the surrounding hills begin changing color.
September and October can be particularly good for photographers who want pleasant temperatures and fewer visitors.
Winter
Winter can be surprisingly atmospheric.
The bare trees and grey stone architecture can create a much moodier interpretation of Gjirokastër.
Cloudy weather is not necessarily a disadvantage here. Soft light can actually be better than harsh sunshine for photographing stone architecture.

Gjirokastër Castle

The castle is the most important photography location in Gjirokastër.
The enormous fortress sits high above the city and provides panoramic views across the Old Town and the Drino Valley.

Look uphill as well as downhill.

The steep streets are one of the reasons Gjirokastër is so photogenic, but they also mean that photographers carrying equipment should plan their route carefully.

For the best combination of comfortable temperatures, atmospheric landscapes and good light, I would choose:
April–June

September–October
Summer is also beautiful but can be hot and busy.
Spring provides green landscapes and flowers, while autumn gives warmer colors and lower-angle sunlight.
Gjirokastër vs Berat for Photography
If you have time for both, visit both.
Berat and Gjirokastër are often mentioned together because both are UNESCO World Heritage cities with remarkable Ottoman architecture.
But they photograph very differently.
Berat is famous for its white Ottoman houses cascading down the hillside and the Osum River.
Gjirokastër is darker and more dramatic, with grey stone roofs, steep streets and a massive fortress dominating the city.
